Library Director – Chester Library
The Chester Library is offering an exciting opportunity for a thoughtful, energetic and capable
leader to join us as Library Director.
A joint municipal library serving Chester Borough and Chester Township, NJ, a community of
9,500 people, the Library is the heart of our community. Our residents value the Library as a
place to meet and engage, participate in programs and events and take advantage of the Library’s
diverse resources. The Library is our community’s center for connection, information and life-
long learning. We are actively involved in Chester Borough and Chester Township, working
with our top-rated schools and other community groups.
Chester Library is a member of The Main Library Alliance, a northern New Jersey network of 49
public libraries.
Responsibilities:
Working closely with the Library Staff of 16 full- and part-time employees and an experienced
and engaged Board of Trustees the Library Director will spearhead the implementation of a
newly approved three-year strategic plan. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for
developing library policies, monitoring library services, developing and managing the budget,
supervising staff and volunteers, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the physical plant,
and staying informed on developments in library management.
Qualifications
- Degree in library science (MLS, MLIS or MSLS) from an ALA accredited school
- New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate
- At least 5 years of library experience in progressively more senior administrative and/or
- supervisory positions; library director experience preferred
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience working with a governing board and related committees
- Participation in library cooperatives, with Main Library Alliance experience a plus
- Residency requirements as set forth in NJ First Act Residency Law
