Role summary: The Bernardsville Library is looking for a part-time programming and publicity assistant to develop and implement online and/or in-person programs for adults, and to write about and publicize those programs. This position will also be responsible for creating and mailing our library newsletter, and will assist in updating our web site.
Why is this job important to the Library?: We believe programs help build community. Programs provide important opportunities for dialogue and for exploring lifelong learning opportunities in a comfortable local environment. Programs bring the information we have in books to life!
Once you’re here, you’ll: Conceive of and develop program ideas for adults – anything from educational lecture-style programs to hands-on fun projects such as crafts and cooking – the more creative the better (within our budget, or course)! You’ll be able to bring in some outside presenters, and you’ll present some programs yourself, based on your abilities and interests. You’ll maintain registration (if necessary), evaluate program successes and failures, and maintain an awareness of the interests of the community. You’ll also oversee our ESL program.
On the publicity side, you’ll write press releases for those programs and distribute them to our various (traditional) media outlets, as well as through our monthly eblast newsletter. You’ll evaluate the success of your efforts and change up your strategy as necessary. You’ll also create and mail our library newsletter and assist in updating our website.
What are we looking for?: Someone with unique and creative programming ideas who has been looking for a library willing to offer them, who doesn’t try to duplicate what other libraries are doing but instead looks for inspiration to museums, to other non-profits, and even to successful for-profit events. Someone who can understand what will appeal to our community even before they know it themselves. Someone who is willing to keep what works and doesn’t try to hang on to what doesn’t.
We need someone who is flexible about duties and work schedules, someone who is organized and able to meet deadlines, and someone who can be creative not only about types of programs but also about delivery methods. Previous demonstrated experience planning and executing events is required. Prior public relations experience is strongly preferred.
Compensation: This position pays $21.00 per hour and will work 21 hours per week on a schedule based on the needs of programs offered and the newsletter. Benefits for this position are paid sick time in accordance with NJ Earned Sick Leave law and paid time off according to the library personnel manual.
Sounds like fun! How do I apply?: Mail resume, cover letter, and a writing sample (all are required) describing your interest and qualifications to Alexandria Arnold, Director, Bernardsville Public Library, 1 Anderson Hill Road, Bernardsville, NJ, 07924, or email resume and cover letter to email@example.com. Subject line for emailed applications MUST say “Programming Assistant 2021.” Applications received by 04/14/2021 will receive first consideration.
First interviews will be conducted over Zoom; callbacks will be in person at the Bernardsville Library. Zoom interviewees will be given some questions in advance. See our website for a complete job description.
