Supervising Library Assistant (Full Time)
About the Position
The Florham Park Public Library is seeking an experienced library worker with a proactive management style to join our dynamic and fun-loving team. The ideal candidate is tech-savvy, detail-oriented, and people-focused. This role oversees the efficient and smooth operation of all circulation, technical, and ILL functions of the library and supervises a team of full and part-time library assistants. The Supervising Library Assistant works independently to troubleshoot day-to-day issues, and has the ability to skillfully and tactfully delegate tasks that leverage the strengths of individual team members.

Responsibilities
- Monitors and organizes the flow of work at the circulation desk, in technical services and interlibrary loan, and advises the Director of unmet needs
- Trains and supervises the activities of circulation/technical services staff and library volunteers performing service tasks
- Assigns and coordinates projects among circulation/technical services staff and volunteers
- Catalog adult non-fiction, multimedia, and reference materials
- Oversees the processing of library materials (books, DVDs etc)
- Manages the library’s process for handling overdue and lost materials, and bills patrons for lost items
- Maintains staff instruction and training manuals at the circulation desk, and edits as needed for accuracy
- Handles monthly system reports, understands additional system reports and develops processes for their utilization
- Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of library technology and equipment
- Provides reader’s advisory services by developing knowledge of the library’s holdings, and locating and recommending books for patrons
- Works evenings and weekends on a regularly scheduled basis and as needed to ensure adequate desk coverage for the library
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Experience working with Integrated Library Systems. Familiarity with Polaris/LEAP is a plus
- Enthusiasm for libraries and commitment to the ethics and values of public service
- Thorough knowledge of all functions of technical services & circulation desk procedures, as well as library terminology, library policies and procedures
- Knowledge of Cataloging tools and the Dewey Classification System
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, and enforce library policies and procedures
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to set work priorities and to work, both independently and collaboratively
- Frequently must lift, move and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
Experience and Training
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience working in a library
- Bachelor’s degree. Some graduate and/or library coursework preferred
- Continuing education and training in the areas of technology and other library trends
- Experience working in a library that is a member of the MAIN consortium a plus
